PR blogger Paull Young kindly hooked me up on the Alpha testing phase of the launch of Pownce, the competitor to Twitter and Jaiku.
I've now go some invites to give away, so please leave a message below if you want one.
Pownce is going to be another social network that I will get to know and see what effect it might have on PR and marketing projects I'm working on. As a late starter it might take some time for it to gather steam and do any damage to Twitter, but it seems to be working well and looks nice. I can see how groups will form and exchange buzz using it - Pownce lets you transfer files to your network as well as just messages, so virals could me better suited to this environment.
Pownce, for those that haven't heard the buzz yet, has been set up by Kevin Rose, the guy that "made $60m in 18 months by selling launching Digg" as the cover of BusinessWeek tells us (see the pic in the top right hand side of this blog). Will it win out over Twitter and Jaiku? I'm not holding out. If I were to predict the future, I'd say that which ever service links best with Facebook will get the biggest social network. If you could control your status and post notes into Facebook from inside an IM app for your Twitter, for example, that's the killer app. Right now, I can't see that being possible or even a step away for Jaiku or Pownce, but let's see.
I'm on Pownce at http://pownce.com/drewb
