PR Week vs PR Business

PR Business, the new rival to PR Week, is out tomorrow (Thursday), so I hear from Harvard's Antony Mayfield. He says he has a column in the new mag, which is going out to CIPR members. He will be reviewing the week's news from blogs and online media.

One minute there's no tech and blog regulars in the PR trade press, next thing there's piles of it!

Could Second Life be the next MySpace

Scoble's pointed me to Second Life. This looks like something I could get hooked on. He says you'll be able to blog, share music and do loads more stuff there. Think I might go try it out.

Update: BusinessWeek on Second Life, Red Herring reports that Second Life lands $11m to help the site become more mainstream, Second Life Slashdotted, Washington Post on Second Life: It's about the same things as the real world -- identity, status, seeing and being seen.

PR Week to launch new dedicated technology page

I have just learned that PR Week is to bring out a new technology page. I hear the focus for the page will be B2B and consumer, with around six stories covered. Looking forward to seeing it on Thursday!

Scoble's secrets on MySpace's success

Scoble met MySpace's CTO Aber Whitcomb last night at some swanky and packed Mix06 party in the US. He asked what were the secrets to MySpace's success. Here's the answer:

1) They made sure influentials in Hollywood (stars, bands) were among the first users.
2) They listen to their users and add features frequently (usually noticeable new features every week).
3) They let the users tell them what to do. He mentioned that other services, like Friendster, tried to tell their users what not to do.
4) When MySpace visitors first log on they already had a friend: the founder Tom. That was in contrast to other services where you had to work to find your first friend. His page also gave you a template to get started.

Foxtons and the corruption of UK estate agents

How much would you not want to work in Foxtons' press office right now? Tonight's BBC1 Whistle Blower documentary was the talk of the office and the online forums today. Now, after the airing, you wonder what the firm will do to respond. One thing is for sure, they will lose a lot of customers overnight.

Foxtons is the estate agent with one of the biggest brands in the UK, and the industry's richest boss. The expose on its corruption I found, as someone about to sell a house, really disturbing. DONT USE FOXTONS!

MySpace Generation and bloggers in The Guardian

This morning's Guardian carries an opinion piece from Anthony Lilley on MySpace and a feature on how  big business has barged in on bloggers. Also the Organ Grinder column focuses on MySpace from the readers' perspective. There's actually a load of features in this week's Media Guardian that are quite interesting for Web 2.0 PR types.

In the MySpace article Anthony gives us a pretty high-level snapshot, but doesn't really look at the impact it will have on marketing and PR. Seems the MySpace thing is still a pretty new issue to the MG's readers. I'd be interested to see it done a bit more justice soon (sure that will happen).

On a related topic, PR Blogger Stephen Davies has started trawling for businesses using Myspace to target the user demographic (namely over 64million tech savvy youths). Stephen's first find: Xbox360.

MySpace, the Sun and the digital natives

PR Blogger and Renaissance Chambara are also looking at MySpace's impact on our profession.

RC points out why generation X like blogs and generation Y (the digital natives) like MySpace, and it's really interesting reading. PR Blogger says he read that The Sun is teaming up with MySpace to leverage its online presence, or is it the other way round, as discussed in the comments section in the post.
