Blogging? I’ve never worked so hard in my life. Eighty-hour weeks since I started
Cover story on blogs in New York magazine. It's a long one but take some time to read it. It covers the blog establishment, or A-List, and how these bloggers are making big money. My fave bit? :
To see just precisely how rich blogging can make you, it’s worth visiting Peter Rojas, the cheerful, skate-punk-like editor of Engadget—and the best-compensated blogger in history. When I meet him one December evening in his bachelor pad on the Lower East Side, he’s sitting at an Ikea desk bedecked with three flat-panel screens and looking relatively fresh, considering he’s just come off another eleven-hour blogging jag. Like most A-list bloggers, he hit his keyboard before dawn and posted straight through until dinner. “Anyone can start a blog, and anyone can make it grow,” he says, sipping a glass of water. “But to keep it there? It’s fucking hard work, man. I’ve never worked so hard in my life. Eighty-hour weeks since I started.”
Now, the blog buzz on this article has been a bit confusing. I personally saw this article as a feature that explains what blogging really is, to a world that is much less clued up than the A-list digerati. Some have said it's the must-read story of the year. Yet other bloggers have been moaning about how it's just another one of these mainstream features which "continues to dismiss" blogs. And how it's relevant and yet completely irrelevant. Uh? Is this an American thing? In the UK people still don't understand blogs. Articles like this are good, and they improve overall understanding of blogging. Via Steve Rubel

Four things
I read on Guardian guy Bobbie Johnson's blog about this 'four things' meme that had been doing the rounds. I tracked it back a few steps and saw that it had been through over 1 million bloggers - that was last week. I was wondering when it would get to me... at last, LEWIS blogger Morgan McLintic tagged me. Thing is, some of the categories went missing between Bojo and Morgan, so I'm doing the full version.
Four jobs I've had
Spin doctor - now, oviously. Banker - front desk at Abbey National when I was at Uni, when it was still Abbey National. DJ - clubs, not airwaves. Waiter - hasn't everyone?
Four movies I can watch over and over
I'm not much of an over and over again movie watcher. But 10 years ago when I was into spending my evenings watching my favourites on VHS, the top four would've been Aliens, Ghostbusters, White Men Can't Jump and The Empire Strikes Back.
Four TV shows I love to watch
Four places I've visited on holiday
The wife and I have just come back from a weekend in Brussels, which was nice, as the fast show would say. I used to go to Galicia in Spain as a kid every year, as my mother's from there. Honeymoon in the Maldives and Hong Kong are two I could easily do all over again.
Four favourite dishes
Now that's easy - as I did a top five last night whilst eating moules frites on Rue des Bouchers. Top four would be Sri Lankan curry, fajitas, home made lasagne, and the salted fried shredded chicken that only the chinese in Orpington used to sell which I've never found anywhere else since!
Four places I've lived
I could do 20 but the meme says four: Orpington, Old Street, Worcester and Bristol.
Four sites I visit daily
Well, daily is pushing it. But I visit these sites / read these feeds the most: Linkbunnies, The Guardian, Google (Gmail, blog search etc) and Boing Boing.
Four places I'd rather be
On a beach, on the slopes, near my folks, but I'm fine where I am now too.

What if Scoble and Rubel were cats?
I've often wondered, no really, what would Robert Scobleizer Scoble and Steve Micropersuasion Rubel look like if they were cats? What would they look like?
Now don't go for me now guys, just having a joke, but I reckon Scoble would be one of those chubby ginger cats. Cos he's chubby and ginger. Rubel? One of those bald cats with baggy skin I reckon. But they'd both be adorable and very bloggy moggies ;-)
